I am not an animal person but I do understand the attachment. My mother-in-law's loyal dog Romeo disappeared without a trace. That's even sadder than a pet dying. My mother-in-law (who is now retired) NEVER MISSES WORK! But she was so distraught that she couldn't go into work. You would have thought she had lost a spouse or a child. You could almost touch her grief with your hand.
