But who knows? Let's say for some reason, records, documents, blueprints, etc. get destroyed by some major catastrophe. Maybe hundreds of years from now people will be saying it was aliens who built rocket ships to travel back and forth between planets because humans living during our lifetime could not possibly have been smart enough to build them! (O.o)

Let's face it. The truth is that scientists, archeologists, explorers, etc. don't know a lot about humanity and can not explain things. So we just make stuff up to try to sound like we know what we're talking about and keep it going!

Why do you think they use language like "it appears", "it's probable that", "perhaps it was", or "it could have been that" ... They never say it's certain or for sure or definite. Because they're GUESSING!! Hey! It's job security. LOL.
